Hi, I'm in the process of planting mums and am not sure of the right way. I prepared the soil and put down porus plastic. But now I am considering adding fine sand as the soil here is clay like. 2 years ago we did fertilize and add wood chips to this bed so it is pretty easy to work and weed. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I live in west Tennessee not far from the Missouri River. About 60 miles north of Memphis in Trimble. Thank you, Margaret:
Hello Margaret, I also am planting mums and have done so before with success happily Mums like good drainage (especially if you want them to come back again next year) so whatever you do, add some sandy soil and well-rotted manure to improve the soil.
Also, I would plant them slightly higher than normal to get the drainage. We have very hard clay soil here too in Toronto Canada and by adding some good soil, manure, plant a bit higher than normal and add some sand / gravel to the bottom you should get your mums well established and even coming back next year.
Feed your mums lightly every 2-3 weeks with a well balanced all purpose fertilizer.
