Default When is the best time to dig up split and replant Dahlia tubers?

I used to dig up tubers and replant in the spring but an elderly lady who was an excellent gardener told me to leave them in the ground and I have to say I have had the the most wonderful display for some years. However they are now taking over rose bushes nearby.Thank you.

After a frost kills down the tops, cut off the tops about 6" from the ground but leave the plant in the ground for about 4-7 days before digging- this makes the plant try to start growing again & the eyes will show up making it easier for you to see where they are. If it doesn't frost where you live then you can cut them down in mid - late Oct. & follow the same proceedure. If you go to the Colorado Dahlia Society site there's really good instructions on how to dig & cut up- just follow the link on the left side that says Dahlia Culture.
