put down a new lawn from sod about a month ago and it all seems to be
doing what it should, and most of the sod has rooted nicely to the (all
new) topsoil below.

There are though two small areas where the sod has no roots showing at
all - lift and see, it is as though the sod had just been layed!? (Same
top soil, same watering, etc etc etc). Despite no roots, grass looks
good!

Any explanations welcome.

In one location there does seem to be some creepy crawly type scurrying
when the sod is lifted....can there be root munchers?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Silver Fox,

As a general rule of thumb any decent Scarifier will also Aerate to a
certain extent depending on how well it is manufactured. The old
Qualcast and Black & Decker models used to use "spring tine" scarifiers
which worked only as a scarifier and not very well in my opinion.
Modern Scarifiers normally use a primary drive spinle which has several
blades mounted vertically to not only remove the moss and thatch but
also to cut in to the sod and improve aeration and gradually reduce the
problem year on year (distribute sharp sand or similar after using the
machine)

Some good brands in the electric stable (which also have good after
sales service for spare parts etc) MTD Lawnflite, Al-ko and
Mountfield.

You will often find collection bags are sold as an optional extra for
these type of machines. Scarifiers are not very good collectors and I
would always recommend using a Rotary Lawnmower after the scarifier
purely to collect the debris. They work on vacuum and will effectivly
hoover up anything left lying loose in the lawn.

Hope this helps

I think the anvil type is better. The bypass type are required for a
clean cut, without mashing the branch. You don't much care since it's
all dead anyway. Bypass shears have to be kept sharper. OTOH, if all
you're going to do with them is clear brush it likely doesn't matter.

I getting contradictory advice on tending to my newly planted mums.
I've been told by one good friend, who lives in Queens, NY, that late
every fall, he cuts his mums down to the soil line and every year they
come back bigger and bushier. And I've been told by a local North
Jersey friend who has hothouses, and grows commercial flowers for a
living that I should only prune to shape them in the late fall and
that cutting them to the soil line will only kill them.
The area where I planted them will have snow piled on them by my
town's snow plows, so I'd prefer the cut to soil line method, if
feasible. Still, I'd like to know whose advice I should follow.
