i started a vegetable garden this summer, its my second garden attemped, i expanded larger from last year. I tried to grow as organic as possible. I live in north texas, and two summers in a row my gardens produced next to nothing or very small produce. i get two peppers at a time and they are the size of my little finger, bell peppers are half the size of my hand, tomatoes the size of bouncy balls (with cuts on them) and tons and tons of eggplants that are smaller than a base ball. what happened? the only thing i can think of is grubs! i found i was invaded by grubs when i went to pull my carrots and they were chewed to the top of the soil. any advice? i want to be as organic as possible, i use compost, have use organic fertilisers, and i do not want anything to kill my earthworms. I have tons of healthy fat earthworms and i dont wnat to kill them by accident trying to get rid of the grubs. I want to get a boost and be ready for the next spring growing season. my garden is located on the south side of my house and gets full sun until about two int he afternoon when it begins to get shade from a wood fence. it has good drainage, except the spot where my carrots were chewed up. im working on that now by adding more soil and composting during the winter for more fertile soil. it compost fast with all the earthworms. let me know if you need any more information to help me.
I would like to do a winter garden of lettuces, cabbages, broccoli and cauliflower. Do you recomend that i get my soil fixed first? then start anew with the spring season?
wow hedgehogs are expensive! oh so cute though! Thank you for the advise, i will keep an eye out in my local small animal rescue groups! I do currently have a bunny. i use recycleable bedding so i will add that to my compost pile as well.

We have a small vegetable garden in our backyard (North Texas). Now that most of the plants have matured, I need to know what to do with the plants during the fall, to prepare for next spring. I have been looking for a list of plants to see which ones need to be cut back, which need to be removed entirely and replanted in spring, which should be left alone.

Our garden includes: strawberry, watermelon, honeydew, pumpkin, lettuce, carrot, tomato, fennel, onion, cucumber, garden beans, grape, raspberry, oregano and parsley.

Thanks!

Potato gardening with epsom salt, egg shells, coffee grounds?

I have a compost heap and I'm going to use the finished compost as the main bulk of my potato bed. I will then use more compost and straw mixed together to hill up the plants.

I'm wondering if anyone has practical experience adding coffee grounds, epsom salts and finely crushed egg shells directly to compost when planting potatoes.

I'm theorizing that this would add the calcium and magnesium required, deter slugs, and adjust the acidity to the proper levels, as long as I use them in a reasonable ratio.

Additionally, would ground up dried banana peel add the potassium potato plants require? Is there a better natural source of potassium to add to the potato bed?

Finally, would adding a small amount of ground fish to the mix cause the Nitrogen to spike so high that it would stop tuber production?

I've done hours of research online, and I can't find any solid answers to these questions from experienced organic potato growers.

Any other practical advice on potato gardening is also welcome.
Thank you for your time and expertise!

I am going to grow soy beans, peas, asparagus, eggplant, cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, carrots and broccoli. I live in Hawaii (year round growing season for most veggies!) and the soil I have to work with is very dense with lots of clay. What should I mix it with to make a nice top soil? Also, it rains A LOT where I live-- like 200 inches a year a lot, which means the soil is always damp if not muddy. Will the plants like this or should I add something to help with drainage? I'm a total newbie to gardening so I appreciate any advice, thanks!

Okay so I live in Simi Valley, California and so it's relativley warm all year round. It does get in the mid 50's and up and it does get sort of windy, but since my little patch of dirt is right up against my house I don't think the wind will be too much of an issue. I just moved here so I'm hearing all these weather condition by word of mouth, but I'm pretty sure they're accurate and I'm hearing we rarely even get down to any sort of 50 degree weather.

So what I'm asking is if I should wait to start my garden and what a good time to start would be or if there are certain veggies I can grow in this sort of weather. I'm excited about doing this and would really like to be able to start.

Any tips at vegetable gardening at all would be appreciated! Thank you! =]
