The stalks are handy supports for the runners on bean vines however they rot in two or less years. Also there is a 'tassel' or part similar to corn silks at the tops in early fall.
I live in north central Arkansas

Okay so we went to this really cute little chinese restaurant to eat the other day. The lady was selling these um....I guess they're called rootings of bamboo plants?! Anyway I bought one, they were only a $1.00, but she said to keep them in water 50 degrees above. She said they would live. I want to know can I put this thing in water or will it shrivel up die? I love plants have a few, but I haven't always had the best of luck with the little buggers. Any information that anyone has on the bamboo plant would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Oops. I meant to say put the plant in dirt, potting soil. Long day, even longer night! Sorry!
