Watergate
on and on!
Beth would I mention it if I don't know what that is?

Watergate was the name of the hotel that was broken into by Republican strategists so that was the name of the scandal. Ever since the "gate" suffix has stuck..

Watergate was the name of the hotel that the Committee to re-elect President Nixon broke into illegally. That's why that scandal was known as Watergate -that scandal brought down a presidency and thus other subsequent scandals were tagged with the gate name to stress how serious they were.

After Watergate. The Watergate scandal took place at the Watergate Hotel in Washington DC, and the name stuck.

well watergate is the originator, just because it brought down Nixon, now many major scandals are nicknamed "gates"

Watergate was the name of the hotel where the crime happened. It all stems from that.
