Default Old house with dog odor question

Not completely. What is the sub floor (wood / concrete)? I would wash
/ rinse all the walls with a TSP solution and fresh paint. Trash the
carpet and pad. My house had two dogs from the first owner. I even
pulled all the base board out. Granted I had time to do this work over
six months, so the house was vacant, windows open and fans running.

I'm sure the old appliances had odor in the them ( replaced).

Pull the carpet away from a wall corner - see how many pet stains
exist?

I'd start there after a good shampooing. Do a room at a time and
crank the thing all the way up when you're not in the room.

Don't buy any old piece of junk- get a used Alpine Air on ebay for $75
or so. The XL-15 is worth the $250 or so they go for new-- but a
couple used ones can be moved around to do more than one area at a
time.

My son uses them at a car dealership to kill the odors of pets,
spilled milk & rotted meat that they find in the used cars.
[oh- and a cheeseburger that a salesman left in a new one.<g.]

Also supposed to be bad for rubber things. I suppose I would use
some moderation.

Jim

What is the nature of the soil and/or odor? Just doggie dander from
skin problems or years of urine? Have you asked the seller to have the
problem corrected?

Just some odor that takes a little time to become aware of after walking
into rooms with the windows closed.

I doubt that the animals had been pissing / crapping in the house - probably
just laying around on the rugs. I think some of the responders have been
assuming the worst in terms of the situation.

The problem is, once you notice something like this, it bugs you until you
can eliminate it.

Facts are, until you peel up the carpet and see exactly what's there, you're
ass-u-ming on every point. Even if the carpet has been professionally
cleaned by the absolute best guy in the business, the pad and subfloor will
speak for itself. Had a springer spaniel. Darling of a dog, but it peed
here and there. Had the carpet cleaned half a dozen times professionally.
Then a friend of mine who's a good carpet guy came over. He took one corner
and ripped out about eight feet. OMIGAWD, the stains that were under the
bottom side of the carpet you couldn't see, and the wafting odor from the
pad was enough to make one faint. HE TOLD ME THAT NO ONE CAN GET THE PAD
CLEAN, NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY, WHAT THE PROCESS, OR WHAT THEY TELL YOU.
And the evidence spoke for itself. The top of the carpet looked clean and
nice.

If you're going to assume, assume the worst, and then at least you won't be
disappointed. If one could just tell these things by looking at them, they
could make real money fortunetelling, or working for the CIA.

Steve

Good points. The overall probelm is, it's a small horse ranch that was owned
by a woman for appx. 15 years, and she let everything on the place go. By
the way the place looks, for all I know, the dogs WERE pissing and crapping
inside all those 15 years - the resudual smell might be after carpet
cleaning. Do I even want to deal with what may be a thoruoghly crappy
hygenic situation.

Depends - are you hoping to find good hardwood floors? If so give up.

Next door neighbors are dealing with exact same issue and they decided
to punt and install all new wood.

If you are going to recarpet and don't mind replacing the subfloor, then
it's less of a problem.

If I bought it, it would be to live in it. I'm the clean and neat type and I
just wonder if I would ever be comofortable in there.
