After poking around I found the only problem was that the plastic
cable connector on the mixer door had broken off.

Simple test for that would be if the air flow starts
out OK when the car is first started up with the AC on
after sitting for a couple hours, but then air flow degrades
later when it has time to freeze up. And how long it
takes or when, etc depends on many factors, including
how humid it is.
Regarding what he said about air flow, initially I thought
what you did, ie that by "little cold air", he might just mean
it wasn't blowing cold air. But later in the thread he clarified that
meant it wasn't blowing much air at all.
