TV choices
I have a Samsung TV, about 40" on the diagonal. It is shutting off when it
gets hot. Some here have suggested a cheap easy fix. Haven't called a
repair guy yet. It is one of the three bulb rear projection types.
In today's world, things have changed since I bought this about six years
ago. What is available today, and what are the upsides and downsides to
different tv's? I heard that plasmas can have one little square go dark.
And others probably have their issues, too. What would you buy and why?
And I'm also shopping price, don't necessarily want the cheapest, just want
a good picture, middle of the road price wise.
Thanks
Steve

I had bought an LCD Samsung of the same size a couple of months ago.
Think it was in the $400-500 range. Also got a 32" Samsung LED.
LED's are said to be better and use less power but wife likes the LCD
picture better. We have not done anything to try to tune them.
Plasma's are still out there and even cheaper but I would go with LED or
LCD.
I tossed three, still functional CRT's. Shame how stuff lasts longer
but is technically obsolete in shorter periods.

My Panasonic plasma is 6 years old and still doing swell. I plan on
getting a smaller LCD for the bedroom to replace an very old (20?) TV.
You might look at this site, filled with information, reviews and
addresses the various types.

They do sell TVs but you can ignore that aspect of the site.

You sure the projection TV is only 6 years old??? Around here, Plasma
and other flat panel technology had pretty well displaced the rear
projection units for anything ander 50 inches by then - lower cost,
lighter, better picture, and a lot lighter to move.
I'd go with plasma again if I had to replace mine (40 inch) althogh I
bought a LCD for the basement (26") because it was the only flat panel
I could find that fit and filled the hole in my entertainment unit.

I bought a Panasonic 42" plasma five years ago. The power supply died after
three years. Panasonic stepped up and fixed it (including the ~100 round-trip
service call). I bought another last fall. We also have a no-name 26" LCD
for the bedroom (though one of the 42" is going there when we finally
consolidate everything in one place, again). At today's prices, I'll probably
upgrade the one in the family room to a 55" plasma, or some such. Even
thought they're power hogs, I really like plasmas.

When I bought mine, I ordered a 42" from New Yawk City. It never
arrived. Time kept passing and no TV.
I filed an online complaint with the FTC. Some days later I got a
call from NYC, asking if I filed the complaint. Durn tootin' I did.
The guy tells me his boss was having fits and mad as they were up to
lose business. SO?! You have a problem, I told him. He wanted to know
what he could do to fix the problem. Well, Mr., send the newest 50"
at the same price. I've waited long enough already. I don't think the
50" was available when I ordered the 42".
Not many days later it arrived. It has been a good TV (knock on
wood).
He made an idle threat on the phone about knowing where I lived and he
visited here often. I told the thug to come on down. After his
antics I never removed the complaint,

Bought the first one from a big retailer (HH Gregg) and the second from
Panasonic (employee/retiree deal they offer those from my PPoE). The
Panasonic deal was pretty good ($500 for the top-of-the-line 52").

If it's shutting down when hot, it's the bulb. Replace it.

Most anything you buy will be damned good. I have a little preference
for Samsung and LG close behind.
LED is a tad better than LCD. Plasma takes more power, has a nice
picture, but is more prone to reflections from window light and lamps.
As for size, if you have a 40" now, you will probably like a 47" or
even a 55".
What would I buy? The biggest Samsung I can fit. The picture quality
of my Samsung is fantastic. I have two of them and I'm still amazed
at how good the quality is.

If it's like the old video projectors, a new 50 inch plasma will be
