Default Mouse in the house!?

Eek, Hubby just noticed a hole in the carpet by the cupboard under the stairs, pulled it back and there is a hole in the floorboards too so obviously a mouse somewhere. What do we do now?
Have phoned Environmental Health (we rent a council house) but they can't do anything until tomorrow as it's not an emergency. Well, it's an emergency to me! And we've got a dog, he never even noticed it!
Nowhere is open to buy a mouse trap and don't wanna put one down anyway because of the dog.
Hubby is nailing a piece of wood over the hole as a temporary measure but will these mean that they'll come out elsewhere?

First thing, don't panic, it's not going to bite you to death in your sleep.

Secondly, try purchasing a friendly mouse trap (if you have a conscience that extends to mice) in order to capture it and release it somewhere away from your home.

leave a trap down (or more than 1)
buy one of those mouse deterent things that you plug into the wall and will send out a high pitched noise (that humans cant hear but mice can) on a like 10m frequency range, and it will ward of all mice! however it might affect your dog but you will have to check.
good luck

Good idea about nailing the thing in the hole, if thats where it was, what if its still in the house???? You've gone and nailed it in the house!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't worry too much, if they are coming tomorrow you should be ok.

you can try sprinkling talcum powder around the hole to see if any prints emerge before using pesticides.
