Default Is it hard or easy to maintain a very large vegetable garden?

Large meaning enough to completely feed around 10 or more people without depending on store bought items? And, is it hard to save your annual crops during the winter months? I have never done this before but I am very interested in starting. I live in a very wet, mild climate (NW Washington). I don't want book recommendations, I want opinions from experienced people. Thank you
