Default What needs to go between hot water radiant floor heating and vinyl floor covering?

I'm redoing my kitchen from the floor up. I will have a 3/4" sub floor, then hot water tubes running through aluminum channels. This leaves a surface that is very flat, with just small unevenness at each tube. Is it enough to lay 1/4" plywood over that, then the vinyl flooring? Or does there need to be a thicker plywood layer at that point?
